The Beagle Is a Great Family Dog
The best known beagle may be Snoopy! The beagle is a member of the hound group and has a distinctive bark. The beagles' bark is almost like a howl instead of an actual bark.
Beagles are a very popular dog in the United States. They have been in the top ten most popular dogs in the United States for the last thirty years.
Beagles are considered to be medium-sized dogs. They are very similar to the Foxhound but smaller and with shorter legs. In height, a beagle is generally between 13 and 16 inches. Their weight is between 18 and 35 pounds. The female beagle is normally slightly smaller than the male. Beagles can have a range of colors but the most popular are the tri-color which is white, brown and black. Beagles have adorable ears that are long around the face. They turn slightly toward the cheeks and are rounded at the end. The eyes of the beagle are large and have a pleading look which is hard to resist by their owners.
Sense of Smell
The Beagle has one of the best senses of smell among dogs. It is thought that the beagles’ long ears trap the sense of smell to the nose when their nose is to the ground.
Beagles have a lifespan of 12-15 years. This is typical for dogs their size. Beagles may be prone to epilepsy. Epilepsy can be controlled with medications in many cases. Hypothyroidism can occur in beagles as well as a number of types of dwarfism. Beagles can develop ear infections due to their long ears. Beagles may also have eye problems such as glaucoma and cherry eye. Cherry eye is when a third eye lid forms and must be removed by surgery.
The beagle is a sweet, loving dog. They greet people with a wagging tail. They do well with children and other dogs. However, due to their hunting instincts, beagles are not always good with cats and other non-canine pets. Beagles can be trained to live with cats, but it is best to train them when they are young. Beagles have a mind of their own and they are very determined. They require firm training as well as a proper amount of mental and physical activity. Beagles are calm if given enough exercise. A brisk walk each day is necessary for the beagle. Another good way to exercise a beagle is to purchase animal scents so that they can practice their hunting skills. Owners must be careful when letting a beagle off leash because their recall skills are not good when they are following a scent. They become very much focused on following the scent and will not hear or listen to their owner. The safest way for a beagle to be off leash outside is in a fenced area. Beagles are pack animals and are prone to separation anxiety. There are many ways to treat separation anxiety in beagles and sometimes just adding a friend, another beagle is the answer.
Beagles do well as apartment dwellers as long as they have enough exercise each day.
Beagles are easy to groom. Brush and bathe when necessary. Be sure and check their ears for dirt to avoid infections. Nails should be trimmed on a regular basis.
The beagle is a great family dog and with its' compact size, a beagle can live just about anywhere.
